4-H Youth Promise Provides Role Models

The Anson County 4-H Youth Promise Program is a Governor's One-On-One Volunteer Program that matches court-involved youth or youth at risk for court involvement with positive and caring adult role models. Mentors provide positive social and familial interaction, learning experiences, and support for at-risk youth in Anson County. The mentors deeply touch the lives of youth, helping them to increase their self-esteem, improve their behavior, and prepare for productive adult lives.

The Anson County 4-H Youth Promise Program provides an awesome opportunity to make a difference in the life of a young man or woman. 4-H Youth Promise mentors are men and women, 18 years or older with a valid North Carolina drivers license, who have a sincere desire to make a difference in a young person's life. All of the volunteers go through an application and screening process that includes personal reference checks, criminal background checks, and a personal interview. The volunteers are required to attend three hours of training in preparation for the one-year commitment they make to the youth. Throughout the year, mentors spend two or more hours per week one-on-one with their young person. They participate in activities that promote positive changes in behavior and academics, as well as recreational and social activities that build interpersonal skills.

The mentors play a role in reducing the expense of training school and detention centers, as well as reducing the rate of recidivism among Anson County's population of delinquent juveniles. The 4-H Youth Promise Program accepts volunteer mentor applications year round as the program has a lengthy list of deserving youth waiting for caring individuals who believe in them. For more information about the 4-H Youth Promise Program or to serve as a volunteer, please contact Crystal Chavis, Program Director, by phone at (704) 694-2915 or by E-Mail at Crystal_Chavis@ncsu.edu.
