New Banner Unveiled at Mooresville-South Iredell Chamber of Commerce

Local partners recently unveiled the new Iredell County JobLink Career Center banner in the lobby of the Mooresville-South Iredell Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center in Mooresville. The banner directs employers and job seekers to the Statesville and Mooresville JobLink Career Centers. The banner includes information on how individuals can benefit in their career and how employers can benefit in their business. "It is a win-win situation for us and the JobLink Career Center," according to Dan Wallace, Executive Director of the Mooresville-South Iredell Chamber of Commerce. "We have many businesses and people who visit the chamber looking for jobs and employees looking to hire them and we know where to send them!", said Wallace. Banners have also recently been placed at the Union County Chamber of Commerce in Monroe and the Cabarrus Regional Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center in Kannapolis. A big thank you to Dan Wallace for suggesting this great way to advertise local JobLink Career Centers and their services in our communities.

Efforts Continue to Assist Persons with Disabilities
Vocational Rehabilitation Awarded Grant Extension

The North Carolina Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services was recently awarded a one-year extension on the NC Work Incentive Grant from the North Carolina Commission on Workforce Development. The project, "Teaming for Employment Access in North Carolina," originated in July of 2003. It will now continue to provide resources through June 2006. The purpose of the grant is to enhance the full range of JobLink Career Center employment services offered to persons with disabilities to maximize successful employment outcomes and to sustain and expand employer relations to create more employment opportunities for persons with disabilities. The funds will also continue to be used to increase the capacity of staff at the JobLink Career Center to offer counseling, guidance, training and other services. Vocational Rehabilitation is looking for opportunities to connect with upcoming job fairs and other employer related events to conduct workshops on disability sensitivity training, tax credit information, and custom designed seminars to meet employer needs. Employer seminars, sponsored by local JobLink Career Centers, were held this spring in Salisbury and Concord to dispel myths on hiring people with disabilities. "Lincoln County Works Job Fair" Really Does Work!

The Lincoln County JobLink Career Center sponsored a countywide job fair on Wednesday July 13, 2005 at the Betty G. Ross Park Gym in Lincolnton. It was an exciting start to a productive event as 120 applicants crowded the job fair during the first hour. The gym comfortably held 23 employers who were actively seeking potential employees. Employers participating included Alpharma, Wireway Husky, La-Z-Boy, Lee Boy, City of Lincolnton, Bosch, Cochrane, Mohican, Lincoln Medical, Timken, R-Anell, AccuForce, AFLAC, Avon, Product Action, Barrett, Lincoln County Schools, P C Homes, Lincoln Staffing, Mega Force, Trans Tech, Adecco, and Food Lion. JobLink Manager Judi Morton commented that many employers expressed their satisfaction with the event and looked forward to participating next year.

The Lincoln County JobLink Career Center Job Fair would not have been made possible without the assistance of all the wonderful Lincoln County JobLink Partners.   • The Centralina Workforce Development Board would like to extend a warm welcome to Dr. Stuart Wasilowski who is the new Dean of Workforce Development at South Piedmont Community College in Monroe. Dr. Wasilowski came to SPCC from Elgin Community College in Illinois. He can be reached swasilowski@spcc.edu or 704.289.8588.

  • Mitchell Community College will be opening the doors next month to the new Technology and Workforce Development Center. The center is located next to the Continuing Education Center at 701 West Front Street in Statesville. It will be used primarily for machining, drafting and electrical installation courses and includes 12 classrooms, a computer lab, a conference room, five other labs and office spaces, and the college's Small Business Center. Community members are welcome to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 20th at 4:30 p.m.
  • Carolina Auction Academy School of Auctioneering will begin its first classes this fall at Stanly Community College's Crutchfield Campus in Locust. Bid calling, negotiations, public speaking, advertising, and auctioneer math are only a few of the subjects that will be included in the comprehensive course. Business Services Coordinator Joins Centralina WDB Team

The Centralina Workforce Development Board is pleased to welcome Mr. Vail Carter as the new Business Services Coordinator for the Centralina region. Vail will be serving as a liaison between the Centralina Workforce Development Board, JobLink Career Centers, and local businesses. He will also handle all aspects of the Incumbent Workforce Development Program.

Vail is originally from Lumberton, North Carolina but has lived in Charlotte for 33 years and briefly in Cabarrus County. Vail has been married to his high school sweetheart, Wanda, for 31 years and they have one daughter, Candice. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a degree in Business Administration and a concentration in marketing. While in college, Vail led a team of students that developed the first formal marketing plan for the former Charlotte Motor Speedway. He was inducted into the UNC-Charlotte Alumni Hall of Fame in 1994.

Vail has a varied background ranging from work with business and financial services, non-profits, and state government. He has also spent a significant amount of time serving as a volunteer on many committees and boards which include, the U.S. Small Business Administration Advisory Council for North Carolina, the Charlotte Common Ground Committee, Housing Authority Commissioner, and community volunteer with various charities. His interests include collecting oral histories and genealogy, backpacking and running. He is currently training to run his fifth marathon.

Life Path Program Enriches Summer
Stanly County Youth Discover the Formula for Success

It has been quite a summer so far at The Resource Development Center in Albemarle. The Stanly County Youth Life Path Program has provided exciting opportunities for young adults to gain summer work experience during the entire month of July. Individuals have been on a journey to adulthood by interning at local businesses including the United Way, YMCA, Stanly County Chamber of Commerce, Albemarle High School, North Stanly High School, Badin School, Stanly County Partnership for Children, Save Our Students (SOS), All Star Learning Center, Quality Daycare, Stanly County Department of Social Services, and many more. As the work experience opportunity comes to an end, the "Pathway to Success" program is gearing up to begin. During the week of August 8-12, 2005, young adults in the Stanly Life Path Program will participate in a five- day workshop that will communicate principles to transform old mindsets and assist them in becoming the success in life they were created to be. Facilitator Bill Baldwin will lead youth to recognize successes in their lives, the power of positive relationships, the power of a vision and how to set goals, surrounding yourself with successful people and then taking action. The week will conclude with a session titled "Come As You Will Be In 2015." Young adults will dress in their very best and act as if their dreams have already come true ten years from now.

Mark Your Calendar! Workforce Development Training Opportunity WIA Youth Programs: A Youth Development Approach

The North Carolina Workforce Development Training Center is offering an interactive and fact-filled one-day workshop for individuals who work with youth. The session will take you from a clear understanding of the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) requirements to the development of your own action plan to energize your program. The overall focus is on the elements of an effective, results oriented program and specific tools for day-to-day implementation. Mr. Eric Rowles, Senior Director of Training & Consulting for the Youth Leadership Institute, will lead the training workshop. Three one-day sessions will be offered at the following locations and on the following dates:
