Incumbent Workforce Development Program Starts on September 1

The North Carolina Commission on Workforce Development recently announced that the Incumbent Workforce Development Program will begin again on September 1, 2004. The program provides North Carolina employers the opportunity to apply for grants to provide employee training programs. The program is designed to upgrade employees' skills and increase companies' competitiveness in the global marketplace. A revised application process is currently being developed.

The Centralina Workforce Development Board was a state leader last year with 11 approved applications for companies who chose to participate in the Incumbent Workforce Development Program. We appreciate the efforts made by the local employers, community college new and expanding industries staff members, and NC State Industrial Extension Service staff to make the program so successful in the Centralina region last year. We look forward to another terrific year!

Ingersoll Rand and GM Nameplate were two of eleven employers last year to receive an Incumbent Workforce Development Grant in the Centralina Region.

Anson County Schools hold Annual Youth Conference: "How to Survive Hip Hop and
Still Be Off the Chain"

On Wednesday June 30, 2004, Anson County Schools held their second annual Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Youth Conference. Ms. Brenda McMillian and Mr. Manzell Spencer, WIA Coordinators, facilitated the conference. Workshops were held for youth at the Anson County Library Theatre from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm.

The conference included workshops which focused on themes that related to being a young adult in today's society. Ms. Judy Carpenter, manager of the Anson County JobLink Career Center, spoke on the topic of "So, You Wanna Work?". Young women were placed in concurrently running breakout sessions with other women that concentrated on relationships, abuse, and stress reduction. The sessions were lead by Dr. Elaine Stevens, local radio talk show host and Ms. Brenda Little. The young men participated in a workshop that addressed having a "Thug Mentality vs. Community Building", lead by Mr. Ahmad Daniels, local motivator and facilitator.

At the close of the workshop sessions, the participants joined together to participate in a personality potential profile test called "Realizing Who You Really Are" lead by Mr. Willie Alexander. Mr. Ahmad Daniels led the closing session with a group discussion on "The Eagle and the Chicken".

An awards ceremony, including lunch was held for all participants, parents and supervisors at the Little Rome Italian Restaurant. Awards were presented to youth that graduated from high school this year and for active participation in the program. The participants designed thank you notes for worksite supervisors thanking them for their caring supervision given during their summer work experience.

The conference was a great success that encouraged and recognized all Anson County WIA youth participants! For more information, please contact Brenda McMillian or Manzell Spencer at (704) 694-2308.
