Mark Whitley Receives Highest Honor

The Centralina Workforce Development Board, Inc. would like to extend its sincere appreciation to former Board chair Mark Whitley for his passion, his vision, and his guidance for the local workforce development system. Mark stepped down on June 30, 2004 after 8 years of service on the Centralina Workforce Development Board.

Mark was honored at the August 10, 2004 Centralina Workforce Development Board meeting at the Cabarrus Regional Chamber of Commerce in Kannapolis. He was presented with the Board's Chairman's Award for outstanding service to the workforce development community. The award has been renamed the "Mark F. Whitley Chairman's Award" in his honor.

Mark is President and Owner of Carolina Carpet Care & Restoration in Concord. He has contributed enormously to the success of the Board through his outstanding leadership as Board chair for the past 5 years and by serving as chair of the Strategic Planning Committee. Mark has graciously given of his time by committing to improving the quality of life for citizens in our region. The Centralina Workforce Development Board appreciates everything that Mark has done in his years on the Board. He will definitely be missed!

Union County Community Action, Inc. Celebrates Youth Achievement!

Union County Community Action, Inc. held its first Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Youth Banquet on July 30, 2004 at the Union County Chamber of Commerce in Monroe to honor all youth that have participated in the program. Youth participants received certificates for their achievements and special recognition was given to those who had made significant strides in reading and math. Employers were also recognized for their contributions to the summer employment program.

Guest Speakers included Angela James with the City of Monroe and Steve Brewer with Belk Department Stores. Both speakers are former WIA Youth Program participants. The youth participants enjoyed a special lunch with family and friends. The banquet concluded with a fashion show about how to dress appropriately for an interview along with games and door prizes.

Textron Fastening Systems and ASMO NC Receive Incumbent Workforce Training Grants

The Centralina Workforce Development Board is proud to announce that two area employers have been awarded Incumbent Workforce Development Program grants. Approval for grants for Textron Fastening Systems and ASMO NC was made by the NC Commission on Workforce Development based on the review and recommendation made by the Centralina Workforce Development Board. Each employer will receive $50,000 to help upgrade the skills of their current workforce

Textron Fastening Systems is located in Stanfield, NC (Stanly County) and has 162 full time employees at the Stanfield location. Textron Fastening Systems manufactures the globally recognized Avdel and Cherry brands, which encompasses a broad range of blind fasteners, including threaded inserts and structural, breakstem and speed fasteners.

ASMO NC, Inc. is located in Statesville, NC (Iredell County) and has 485 full time employees at the Statesville location. ASMO North Carolina is a leading manufacturer of fractional horsepower electrical motors for the automotive industry. Chrysler, Ford, and Toyota are several ASMO customers. ASMO worldwide has grown to be the world's leading manufacturer of automotive direct current motors.

Textron Fastening Systems will work closely with Stanly Community College to provide training to their employees. ASMO NC, Inc. will work with various training providers to train their employees.

The new guidelines and application process for the Incumbent Workforce Development Program (starting again on September 1) can be found at www.centralinaworks.com/whatshot.cfm. The application is in a Word format for easy processing. All applications will need to be submitted to the Centralina WDB for review and within the timeframes outlined in the guidelines.

The Centralina Workforce Development Board looks forward to another successful year with assisting local businesses under the Incumbent Workforce Development Program.

New Retraining Opportunities at Mitchell Community College Targets Health Care Industry

Mitchell Community College's Human Resources and Development (HRD) program recently received a $203,000 grant to extend its services. The funding will be allotted to the HRD Plus Initiative. This initiative is designed to help unemployed workers receive the skills they need to get back into the workforce. It is specifically intended for displaced employees who are interested in entering the health-care industry.

The new program, which is scheduled to begin in late September/early October 2004, will accept workers from any field. Students will participate in a series of classes, including a 12-hour orientation to healthcare opportunities. Along with classes the program will include field trips, guest speakers and extensive group counseling.

Students will be eligible to enter the job market as pharmacy technicians, patient-care technicians, certified nursing assistants, and phlebotomists, as well as several additional careers. The Human Resources and Development Program Grant is available for two years. The Centralina Workforce Development Board is proud to a supporter of this initiative.
